オイルパステルで描くケーキ屋 Room for Cake by Niina

I hardly have any memories of my childhood birthdays.

The last time I celebrated my birthday with my family was when I was in first grade of elementary school.

I remember inviting 7-8 friends over and receiving presents, and playing together.

We didn’t have much and started living in a tiny room with a small kitchen that was placed on the hall way. The poverty that continued from second grade of elementary school to second grade of junior high.

I was senior in high school, when I started buying birthday cakes again.

At that time, I was already living separately from my mother and was earning money while attending high school doing an internship. When I turned 18, I wanted to buy a cake and celebrate even if it was just myself, after a long time.

And ever since then I’ve wanted to make birthdays a little special for my family.

Baking cake isn’t really easy in Japan as most house do not have ovens, and of course, myself isn’t so familiar with baking. So I was always in search of a cake shop that could make the special cake that I imagined in my head, which I found to be a very difficult task. And,,, amidst the difficulty in finding a shop that could make the custom cakes I wanted, “Room for cake by Niina” was the one that said they could take my order.

Really? Is it possible?

Although I had never spent such an amount on a cake before, I couldn’t help but place an order, excited to see what kind of cake she would make. The result was just as I had hoped.

After that, I ordered quite a few cakes from there, and I was always very satisfied with the results.

And at a time when it was difficult to find carrot cakes anywhere in Tokyo, but they had carrot cakes. Whenever I visited my friend who loved carrot cakes, I would often stop by there.

Recently, when that friend’s daughter had her birthday, I visited Room for cake again. I always thought the tiny space and the non-Japanese style shop front is very special, so I wanted to try drawing the store front with oil pastels, changing the colors slightly from reality.

The work took about 3 hours.

I hope they remain as a shop that can make cakes to make both special occasions and everyday life special for many people in the future…

幼い頃の誕生日に関する記憶はほとんどありません。

最後に家族で自分の誕生日祝いをしたのは小学校1年生の時でした。

友達を7〜8人ほど家に招いてプレゼントももらったり楽しかった思い出がありますが、それっきりだったと思います。小学校2年生から中学校2年生になるまで続いた貧乏生活。

私が再び誕生日ケーキを買い始めたのは高校3年生の時からでした。

その時はすでに母と別々に暮らしていて、高校に通いながら実習に出てお金を稼いでいました。18歳の誕生日を迎えた時、久しぶりに一人ででもケーキを買って食べたいと思いました。

その後も家族の誕生日には特別なケーキを用意したくなる私。

でも私が思うような注文ケーキを作ってくれるお店がなかなか見つからない中、私の注文を受けてくれると言ってくれたのが “Room for cake by Niina” でした。

明るい笑顔のパティシェは私が考えているデザインを見せると快く承諾してくれました。

本当に？可能なの？

今まで使ったことのない金額をケーキに使いましたが、彼女がどんなケーキを作ってくれるのか楽しみでつい注文してしまってました。結果は期待通り。

その後もかなりの数のケーキをここで注文し、結果はいつも大満足でした。

そして東京のどこにもキャロットケーキを見つけるのが難しかった頃、キャロットケーキを売っていたため、キャロットケーキが大好物なカナダ人の友達のお家に遊びに行く時は、結構な頻度でここに寄っていました。

最近、その友達の娘が誕生日を迎えたある日、誕生日パーティー向かう前、再び Room for cake を訪れた私は、日本らしくない雰囲気のストアフロントを絵に描いてみたいと思い、実際とは少し色合いを変えてオイルパステルで表現してみました。

まずはスケッチ。 2B鉛筆でサクサク描いてみました。

次にオイルパステルで大部分の線を引き始めました。

彩色は、元の店の灰色をベースにして、温かくて居心地の良い感じの低彩度のピンク系にしました。

いつも窓際に陳列されている4段のケーキと花を表現してみました。

そして店の看板や他の文字を色鉛筆とホワイトジェリーペンで追加し、輪郭を整えて完成しました。

どこか少しぼさぼさしたパステル感のあるショップと滑らかなレンガの外壁が対照的な感じに仕上げてみました（写真だと色合いが少し変わってしまっています）

作業時間は約3時間。

これからも多くの人々の特別な日と普段の生活も特別にすることができるケーキを作ってくれるショップとして残ってくれることを願っています…
